A gas turbine engine (10) adapted to be powered, at least one mode of operation, by liquid hydrogen comprises a compressor (11) combustion equipment (12) a reaction turbine (13) and a power turbine (14). Air destined for the compressor (11) is placed in heat exchange relationship with the liquid hydrogen fuel in a first heat exchanger (18). Air exhausted from the compressor 11 is placed in heat exchange relationship with the exhaust efflux of the power turbine (14) in a second heat exchanger (21). The resultant exhaust efflux of the engine has a low infra-red signature.
