In a process for reducing the average data rate of motion vector information, the components of the motion vectors are separately or in combination compressed losslessly by exploitation of the correlation of motion vectors in the horizontal and at least one other dimension, in particular using a spatial transform followed by a variable-length encoder. Typically, the transform is a Discrete Cosine Transform. Optionally, where a set of motion vectors is associated with a macroblock of an image, the vectors within the set are translated to equivalent velocity values and passed through a linear transform. |
