This invention is a surgical stay (10) including a hook (12), a handle (14), and an elastomeric band (16). The hook has a tissue engaging portion, and is retained by the handle such that the tissue engaging portion extends from a first end of the handle. A handle end (22) of the band is retained by a second end (50) of the handle. The band has a longitudinal body (18), and at least one hub (20) disposed around the body. The hub has a generally flat engagement surface facing the handle.
