A direct current power supply has a generator 21, 22, 23 driven by hand or foot compression effort, and energy storage means in the form of a rechargeable battery (26, Fig.2) or capacitor which is charged by the generator. The supply may provide power to a fixed or portable apparatus, such as a remote control transmitter (eg. for a television), a personal computer, a helmet torch, or a mobile telephone. The supply may have a pad 3 biased to a raised position 9 by a spring 8 and movable by heel pressure so as to act via a recirculating ballscrew device 2 which converts linear motion of pad 3 to rotary motion of a nut 4. Rotation of the nut 4 drives the rotor 21 of an alternator via a unidirectional clutch 16 and gears 15, 17. A similar device which is operated by hand pressure may be incorporated in a remote control transmitter (Figs.4-7) and may have a shape, size and connectors (70, 71) which are the same as those of a battery pack which the transmitter is designed to use. An alternative supply allows generation of power whilst walking and has a device (Figs. 8,10) to be attached under the heel of the foot or footwear, and a generator (Figs.9,11) disposed in a remote housing (120). Foot pressure causes linear movements of a cable (112) coupled between the heel-mounted device and the housing (120), and this motion acts via a sector gear (126), a unidirectional clutch (122) and other gears to drive the rotor (144) of an alternator mounted in housing (120) together with a rectifier and a rechargeable battery. A spring (137) is provided to absorb the energy of a rapid foot depression, and to transfer the energy whilst the walking cycle continues. |
