Monitoring a chemical process, e.g. the pyrolysis of radioactive waste taking place inside a given apparatus, and designed to control the unwanted entry of air, comprises detecting and, when necessary, dosing a constituent of air in the atmosphere inside the apparatus. The air constituent is a rare gas such as argon, which is detected by gas phase chromatography.
