A non jamming sludge pump has a tapering pump housing (2) that widens from the input to the output. A screw shaped impeller (10) with a similar taper is fitted into the pump housing with a set clearance from the internal wall. The internal wall of the pump housing is smooth and without any restrictions to the pumped flow. The screw impeller has one or more turns and is made of stainless steel welded to the impeller hub.
