An evaporative cooling system (10) for an air conditioner is disclosed that includes a perforated hose (42, 40) wrapped around the upper periphery of an outdoor air conditioner condenser (20). A control unit (22) is provided for controlling a flow of water through the hose (40) in response to sensed condition such as temperature, which flow may vary continuously or in steps as the sensed temperature changes. A method for using the system is also described.
