A primary catalytic converter (5) is followed by a second storage catalytic converter (6). The exhaust gas recirculation line (4a) branches out of the exhaust system upstream of the second catalytic converter. The first catalytic converter is immediately downstream of the exhaust manifold. It may be an oxidation- or three-way catalytic converter. There is an exhaust gas recirculation cooler (9) in the recirculation line. The connection of the recirculation line into the inlet system is located immediately before of the cylinder head inlet.
