The invention relates to a method for compressing a sequence of data elements and for decompressing the latter providing lossfree and space-saving compression. The data elements are stored in a compressed or uncompressed manner depending on the correlation of preceding and following data elements in the sequence of data elements. Said method can be used particularly for the display in a freely programmable combined instrument in a motor vehicle. The data to be compressed is especially image data.
