In accordance with the present invention, a compound refractive lens (44) for the collection, focusing and collimation of x-rays, consisting of N individual unit lenses (10) numbered I=1 through N with each unit lens substantially aligned along an axis (8), such that the I-th lens has a displacement tI orthogonal to said axis, with said axis located such that SIGMA <N> ti = 0 and wherein each of said unit lenses comprises a lens material having a refractive index decrement delta < 1 at a wavelength lambda < 100 Angstroms.
