Procedure in which the time for passage of a unit such as a tooth or chain link as well as intervening gaps is measured at a measurement station. From the measured time periods characterizing values are determined. Succeeding measured values can then be compared with these values, or design values, and if the comparison value lies outside tolerance a control signal generated. An Independent claim is made for a device for monitoring a conveyor belt, rotary saw etc.
