A method for securely fitting an exhaust manifold onto the cylinder head of an IC engine uses spacers (9) with a loose fit on the manifold studs (5). The exhaust manifold flange (3) is secured by fitting nuts (6) and washers (11) onto the studs and tightening. The loose fit of the spacers allows thermal movement of the flange over the sealing gasket without causing leaks. The spacers are made in a low cost process and the washer (11) can be replaced by a top flange profile of the nuts.
