METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR CHARGING PLASTICIZED POLYMERIC MOULDING MATERIAL INTO A MOULD

Charging apparatus (10, 110) for charging plasticized moulding material into a mould (12, 112) includes a measuring cavity or chamber (50, 150) and a measuring plunger reciprocal within the chamber (50, 150) for adjusting the volume of the chamber (50, 150) and discharging the moulding material from the chamber (50, 150). The apparatus further includes a holding chamber (30, 130) in communication with the measuring chamber (50, 150) for receiving moulding material, and a moulding plunger (32, 132) reciprocal within the holding chamber (30, 130) for adjusting the volume and for discharging moulding material from the holding chamber into the mould (12, 112). The plungers (32, 52, 132, 152) may be computer controlled. The measuring and holding chambers (50, 30) may be in communication via an external conduit (60). Instead, they may be in a common body (122), arranged in series and divided by the moulding plunger (132), communication being via a passage (160) through or around the moulding plunger (132).
