Modulation of substance P by GABA analogs is disclosed. Preferred GABA analog compounds include gabapentin and pregabalin. Methods of this invention include the modulation of substance P, as well as methods for preventing or treating conditions associated with substance P, by administering to an animal an effective amount of one or more GABA analog compounds. Conditions associated with substance P include headaches and migraine, neurogenic inflammation, emesis, nausea and vomiting, cough and bronchitis, obesity, allergy, asthma, hemorrhoids and anal fissures, ulcer, fever, infertility and periodontal disease.
