New tungsten carbide crystal, useful for producing hard metal tools, high strength compounds and hard material coatings, has similar numbers of tungsten and carbon atoms at body-centered cubic or similar lattice sites

A tungsten carbide crystal, of approximate formula WC with W and C atoms occupying the sites of a crystallographic body-centered lattice, is new. An Independent claim is also included for production of the above tungsten carbide by heating of tungsten powder with carbon black or graphite at 1500-2000 deg C and controlled cooling preferably with a hold period at between 600 and 1600 deg C.
