Arc welding process comprises using an impulse operating voltage with steep edges between the peak values of the operating voltage of not more than 1500 nsec. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for arc welding comprising a rectifier (25) supplying an inverter (26) with current, a transformer (27) connected to the inverter and also a further rectifier which in turn is connected to an impulse former (29). The impulse former releases the operating voltage to lines (21, 22) which led to the welding electrode and to the workpiece.
