A cylinder block casting for a water cooled IC engine has a double walled structure with the outer wall (50) of the water jacket incorporating cylindrical shells (4a, 4b) to take the cylinder head studs. The cylindrical shells extend partway down the side of the cylinder block and do not protrude unduly from the sides of the block. The protruding end fittings (4a) for the studs are reinforced by bridges (11) between the inner and outer walls of the cylinder block.
