The valve assembly has a valve housing (2) with a flow regulating valve, an electrically operated valve pin coaxial to the flow regulating valve, a piston (1) forming the flow regulating valve that allows an unhindered pressure medium connection between the connections of a pressurised medium source and a pressurised medium load in its base position. The valve piston is penetrated by the valve pin (4) towards a valve seat (3) inside the valve housing. A flow cross-section (5) between the valve pin and piston is closed by electrical actuation of the valve pin. With the valve pin in the closed state the flow cross-section passes pressurised medium from the source connection (6) to the valve seat only via a fixed stop (7) whose opening cross-section (8) is varied by the action of a hydraulic pressure difference on the piston acting on the valve pin.
