The process for detecting and monitoring a partial space, especially to determine the occupation of a vehicle and the activation and/or switching of additional devices derivable therefrom provides for the radiation of ultra-sound from a sensor (5) with a transmitter and receiver towards the partial space. The reflected signal supply by the receiver is taken to an evaluation unit and evaluated. Depending on the result, additional devices can be activated and/or switched. The sensor for the partial space (12) makes use of several transmitters (6) and receivers (7). The return signals are evaluated for transmit time difference, distance and/or the signal contours determined by the amplitudes and evaluated with reference to the contours of the object in the partial space (12).
