PURPOSE: A button input method in a portable terminal is provided to input a plurality of numbers and characters using a limited quantity of button graphics on the screen of a portable terminal provided with a touch screen and a miniature screen. CONSTITUTION: If power is on and a function to input numbers and characters is inputted by a user, a central processing unit displays button graphics corresponding to "123", "456", "789" and "0*#" on a display unit. The central processing unit receives the user's input of coordinates(x,y) on a touch screen input unit. The central processing unit compares an inputted coordinates data and each button graphic domain of "123"," 456", "789" or "0*#". If a coordinates data is a "123" button graphic domain, the central processing unit displays a button graphic of "1", "2" and "3" on the display unit and processes the button. If a coordinates data is a "456" button graphic domain, the central processing unit displays a button graphic of "4", "5" and "6" on the display unit and processes the button. If a coordinates data is a "789" button graphic domain, the central processing unit displays a button graphic of "7", "8" and "9" on the display unit and processes the button. If a coordinates data is a "0*#" button graphic domain, the central processing unit displays a button graphic of "0", "*" and "#" on the display unit and processes the button.
