PURPOSE: A system and a method for detecting an engine misfire are provided to prevent the wrong detection or non-detection of the engine misfire caused by the rotational number of an engine or a load. CONSTITUTION: A misfire-detection starts and a crank position signal and a reference mark are detected through an engine misfire detection system. Thereafter, an electronic control unit selects the optimum phase delay angle. A period of execution or any of top dead centers is measured. A change rate of the periods is measured and a reference value of misfire detection is established to be compared with the change rate of the periods. Then, misfire is decided by comparing the change rate of the periods so that the misfire detection is completed.
