Sorbent (I) opt. contg. a stabiliser (II) is contacted at e.g. 200-600 deg.C with the stream and obtd. sulphided sorbent regenerated in a steam stream. (I) can be supported on clay, silicates, Al2O3 or titania. (II) is e.g. Cu, Ni, Co, Fe or their oxides. Regeneration is at e.g. 300-500 deg.C. (I) may be obtd. by impregnating a support with tin hydroxide or halide soln. and calcining.
