A liquid material dispensing system (10) includes a nozzle tip (40) that is adapted to dispense droplets (58) of liquid material that expand in flight toward a substrate (12). The droplets (58) elongate in orthogonal directions in a plane that is substantially transverse to the direction of travel (60) of the droplets (58) toward the substrate (12). Preferably, each droplet (58) elongates in pattern width and in pattern length during its flight toward the substrate (12). The elongated droplets (58) impact the substrate and contact adjacent droplets to form a generally rectangular layer of liquid material (92) within a predetermined area on the substrate (12). Methods for forming a generally rectangular layer of liquid material (92) on a substrate (12) are also disclosed.
