PURPOSE: A method and a device for discriminating an optical disk, are provided to performs an operation of focusing and moving to a track direction of the optical disk and returning to an original position, so as to discriminate a kind of the optical disk of CD(Compact Disc) and DVD(Digital Video Disc) series. CONSTITUTION: An FES(Focus Error Signal) is detected, and the size of the FES is compared with the first reference value. If the FES is larger than the first reference value, the size of a TES(Tracking Error Signal) is compared with the second reference value. If the TES is larger than the second reference value, an optical disk is discriminated to be a playback for only DVD(Digital Video Disc) series. The size of the TES is compared with the third reference value. If the TES is smaller than the third reference value, the optical disk is discriminated to be a playback for only DVD series.
