PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for equalizing a histogram for improvement of picture quality of an image sensor is provided to remove a color cutoff and a color distortion, thereby enhancing the picture quality. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for equalizing a histogram for improvement of picture quality of an image sensor comprises: a mean value generating part(300) for generating a mean value from input image values in response to a control signal; a middle value generating part(310) for generating a middle value of critical range values; a comparator(320) for comparing the mean value output from the mean value generating part with the middle value output from the middle value generating part to output a comparing result; a target point deciding part(330) for deciding target point image values having different values with respect to a first case in which the mean value is smaller than the middle value and a second case in which the mean value is the same or greater than the middle value in response to a programmable first and second parameters, the middle value, the mean value, and the comparing result; and a mapping part(200) the image value to a new image value in response to the target point image value of the target point deciding part, the critical range value, and the mean value.
