PURPOSE: A cosmetic composition containing Canna indica extract is provided, which shows good inhibition effect of 5alpha-reductase activity, so inhibits secretion of sebum, and inhibits production of melanin pigment, so can be used for improvement of freckles or skin whitening. CONSTITUTION: A process for the preparation of Canna indica extract comprises of: pulverizing Canna indica; pouring the pulverized Canna indica 300g to 80% methanol solution 3L, boiling in circulating extractor with refrigerating condenser for 3hrs; filtering with 300mesh filter sheath, and extracting the residue again for 1 time by the same process; adding each extract together, filtering the extract with the Whatman No.2 filter sheath to eliminate non-soluble material; concentrating under decompression by a distillation apparatus with refrigerating condenser at 60°C, and freeze-drying to get dried Canna indica extract 72g. The cosmetic composition or an ointment for external use contains the Canna indica extract 0.0001-10.0wt.%, desirably 0.0005-10.0wt.%(as dried weight).
