PURPOSE: An electric-discharge lamp is provided to ensure excellent durability, prevent a breaking from a prolonged discharge and maintain high efficient discharge for a long time by generating discharge by a large-sized bowl shaped electrode. CONSTITUTION: A discharge lamp has a fixing part inserted into a socket, a bulb maintaining hermetic state, a conductor for transmitting electric current externally supplied, and a bowl shaped electrode(14). The inside of the bulb is filled with an inert gas or maintained in vacuum state to prevent vaporization or oxidation. The bowl shaped electrode(14) is connected to the conductor and generates discharge between a discharge electrodes(30) arranged outside the bulb. The discharge electrode(30) is defined as a plate and has a number of holes(32) to receive the bulb. The plane of the discharge electrode(30) is aligned with the upper end of the bowl shaped electrode(14).
