PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photographic element having high sensitivity and less liable to lower image sharpness. SOLUTION: The photographic element includes a transparent film substrate and an image forming emulsion layer with radiation sensitive silver halide grains containing >50 mol% bromide on the basis of the amount of silver and chemically sensitized with at least one of a middle chalcogen sensitizer and a noble metal sensitizer. A layer which directly receives radiation for exposure from the image forming emulsion layer is a non-image forming layer and contains composite silver halide grains formed from (a) tabular silver halide grains containing >50 mol% bromide on the basis of the amount of silver and having 0.03-0.20μm thickness and an average aspect ratio of >20 and (b) silver halide epitaxy disposed on the edges of the flat platy silver halide grains, containing >50 mol% chloride on the basis of the amount of silver and occupying 0.1-50 mol% of the total amount of silver in the composite grains and coated by 0.1-1.5 g/m2 coating weight.
