PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for using a RAM of a large capacity in the case that dirt of a glass plate protecting a white level correction white board in a scanner and an image sensor is detected and storing its position information. SOLUTION: In the case of reading a white board to make white level correction, data in excess of a specified value among data read by an image sensor are discriminated to be caused by dirt of the white board or a glass plate. Furthermore, a read range by the image sensor is divided into areas A-D and presence of dirt shown in ' ' is detected in the unit of the areas. A RAM stores information denoting the areas A, C from which dirt is detected. Moreover, the stored information is displayed to urge a user to clean the white board and the glass plate.
