Date Feb. 19, 1998In an inverter driving method, a method of completing an initial charging of a capacitor without damaging an upper arm-side semiconductor switching element, even when ON-signal latch thereof occurs during the initial capacitor charging period, is provided. The method applies to driving an inverter having an output unit in which at least one circuit of a serial connection, which comprises a pair of series-connected and complementarily ON-OFF driven semiconductor switching elements that are connected between positive and negative poles of a first DC power source. In this method, the initial charging of a capacitor at the inverter starting time is done by driving the series-connected semiconductor switching elements using alternately repeating short-time ON-OFF operations.
