PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image pickup element and device for substantially solving the problem of generating color moire fringes caused by a periodic coding array, for realizing miniaturization, low costs and color image pickup with high resolution, and for sharply increasing an image pickup dynamic range. SOLUTION: This color image pickup device is provided with a CCD image pickup element 4 having a six color random array in which a color coding array fulfills an array limiting condition that an arbitrary pixel under consideration is made adjacent to pixels in the five colors other than the color of the pixel under consideration at the four sides or four angles of the pixel under consideration, and in which the six colors constituting the six color random array are constituted of three primary colors with two sensitivities for each color, a digital process circuit 7 which performs color separation processing based on a random color coding array, and a storage means constituted of a mask ROM or EEPROM 17 which stores array data related to the random color coding array.
