PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop an action of a bending machine according to a regulation and perform a function as a safety device even if a work with a flange is processed by installing a light projection/receiving unit which is positioned inside a work flange and has a sensor part extendably upwards/downwards on both ends of an upper die. SOLUTION: Light projection/receiving units U1 and U2, wherein elastic members 1 and 5 are provided narrowly, are extendably installed on both ends of an elevatable upper die of a bending machine such as a press brake, and light beam positions of the units U1 and U2 descending integrally with the upper die are regulated by keeping a given interval dimension from a tip part of the upper die downwards. A function as a safety device is provided to the portion from a position where the tip of the light projection/receiving unit descends together with the upper die and is brought into contact with a processed portion to a given interval dimension where a tip part, or a blade of the upper die is brought into contact with the processed portion. Then, the function as the safety device can be released while the processing operation is performed by bringing the tip part of the upper die into contact with the processed portion within a given area.
