PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cassette tape and a magnetic recording and reproducing device, wherein the erroneous operation of a tape starting/finishing end detection is suppressed. SOLUTION: A magnetic tape 3 having a leader tape 4a joined to a starting/ finishing end and a pair of tape reels 2a and 2b for winding the magnetic tape 3 thereon are housed in a cassette main body 1. The light transmittance of the leader tape 4a is set lower than that of the magnetic tape 3. An optical path 11 is formed so as to detect a detecting light from a tape starting/finishing end detection light source 8 inserted into the cassette main body 1 via a magnetic tape tensely laid between the tape reels when the cassette is loaded in a magnetic recording and reproducing device.
