Portable device (100) for remotely providing location information regarding surveyed objects, such as lumber units (10), which is used for inventory identification and classification. An operator carries the device within a defined area containing an object. Within this area, the locations of both the object and the device are monitored by a tracking computer system (80). The device uses a distance measurement unit (108) to determine the distance between an observation point (120) and a highlighted spot (121) on the object, a rotation measurement unit (100f) to ascertain tilt, and a vertical distance measurement unit (109) to calculate the distance of the point off the ground. All information is communicated by the device to the tracking computer system which, in turn, communicates with an office computer system (84). Thus, the device and the office computer system may exchange data, enabling the operator to determine pertinent information about the object. |
