PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for preparing split pieces of wood by which beautiful split pieces can be accurately obtd. and lives of score knives can be drastically lengthened. SOLUTION: A pair of an upper shaft 11 and a lower shaft 12 provided in parallel at a specified interval up and down, a plurality of or a number of score knives 13 fixed on the upper shaft 11 at specified pitches in the shaft direction, and a corrugated roll 15 fixed on the lower shaft 12 and on the outer peripheral face of which a plurality of or a number of channels 14 formed in the circumferential direction have respectively the same shaft centers as those of the edges of the score knives 13 and are provided in the shaft direction of the lower shaft 12, are provided and a wood 19 is split under a condition where waste wood generated is held in the channels 14 to protect the edges of the score knives 13.
