PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water cleaning apparatus and a water cleaning method which are capable of carrying out solid-liquid separation to a conventional extent without using a flocculant, being accompanied with a little amount of sludge, and operated at low running cost. SOLUTION: This water cleaning apparatus is provided with a multi-step type thickener 1 comprising a first thickener 2 in the upper part of a plurality of second thickeners 3-5, clarification filtering tank and a gravitational dewatering type sludge dewatering tank 58. In the multi-step type thickener, water obtained by separation by the first thickener 2 is approximately evenly distributed to the second thickeners 3-5. Water and suspended solid are efficiently separated by a strip like filter so positioned around the outer circumference of the second thickeners 3-5 as to be freely movable and rotatable.
