PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cold cathode fluorescent lamp capable of thinning a back light unit and lightening in weight and drastically improving and enhancing starting characteristics. SOLUTION: This cold cathode fluorescent lamp has a glass tube 5 disposed with a phosphor layer 6 in the inner wall surface and sealed with a rare gas and mercury, and cold cathodes 7 and 7' mounted on the tip end of a pair of lead-in wires 8 and 8' that are sealed in both ends of the glass tube 5. On the outer surface of the glass tube 5 in the area where the cold cathodes 7 and 7' are placed, luminous films 9 and 9' are formed or disposed.
