PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand a stratified combustion operation area into a high load side by expediting the vaporization of a fuel by contriving a cavity shape and increasing the fuel amount injectable into the latter half of a compression stroke, in the injection in a cylinder type spark ignition internal combustion engine for advancing the fuel injected in the cavity formed on a piston top surface at the latter half of the compression stroke on the bottom wall of the cavity and leading near the ignition plug by the facing side wall. SOLUTION: An ignition plug 6 arranged on a cylinder upper wall, a fuel injection valve 7 for directly jetting fuel into the cylinder and a cavity 8 formed on the piston top surface are provided. The cavity has a bottom wall 8a and a facing sidewall 8b, facing the fuel injection valve and at least two recessed passages 10a, 10b opening to the facing sidewall and piston top surface are provided in the cavity.
