Anaerobic degradation process for purifying effluent, uses mat with enlarged surface area and water holding capacity as substrate for the microorganisms

The substrate for the microorganisms comprises a mat with elements that increase its surface area and increase its water holding capacity to 25-100 l/m3. A method for purifying effluent uses a reactor (1) with a chamber (3) containing a means acting as a substrate for microorganisms. Aerobic degradation of the contaminants in the water is carried out by passing the effluent over the substrates, in the presence of oxygen. The substrate comprises a mat with elements that increase its surface area and increase its water holding capacity, optionally in conjunction with adjacent elements. The water holding capacity of the mat is 25-100 l/m3.
