The present invention relates to a method for forming a protective coating on a metallic substrate wherein a flexible adhesive layer is formed on the metallic substrate, a syntactic foam precursor is applied to the flexible adhesive layer, and the syntactic foam precursor is cured to form a protective coating on the metallic substrate. Preference is given to the use of a flexible adhesive comprising an epoxy resin in combination with an epoxy syntactic foam. |
