System and method for detection of an accessory device connected to a portable computer

Embodiments of this invention provide for detecting a type of an accessory device connected to a portable computer. The portable computer may detect a signal from the accessory device and determine the type of accessory device using the signal. Once the type of accessory is identified, the portable computer may implement a software that matches the particular type of accessory. The type of accessory may be identified by measuring a voltage of a signal line that is coupled to the accessory device. The value of the voltage on the signal line may then be matched to a corresponding accessory type using a memory of the portable computer.
