The machining and/or assembly installation has a number of work stations arranged in a line. An endless chain transfers the workpieces from one work station to another one. Each work station has a housing (8) with guides for the conveyor chain. The workpieces are mounted on carriers which have retaining sockets. The housings are identical and are fastened to each other and to the turn-round stations (7) for the endless chain.
