The system has a cleaning arrangement (8) that cleans a headlamp glass (6), e.g. a dispersion panel, when activated, a dirt sensor (13) and a controller that activates the cleaning arrangement depending on the dirt sensor signal. The dirt sensor is mounted on the exterior of the headlamp glass for detection of the degree of fouling. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a windscreen wiper system fitted with a headlamp cleaning system.
