The invention relates to a lifting and tipping device (12) that is compact and whose container receiving device (22) is displaced substantially from the bottom upwards without any substantial horizontal component when it takes hold of the garbage container so that garbage containers (6) of different heights can be handled. The lifting and tipping device (12) disposes of a four-bar mechanism (30), with the front joint element (34) being stationarily mounted on the collecting container (4). The swivel drive device (14) is mounted on the rear joint element (48) and carries a swivel arm (20) with the container receiving device (22). The invention is further provided with a device that transforms the swiveling movement of the swivel drive device, during a simultaneous swivel movement of the swivel arm (29), into a lifting movement of the four-bar mechanism (30) which stops at a defined height of lift. The four-bar mechanism (30) can be locked at a defined height of lift.
