A holder for a vehicle door enables the door to be held in a stable grip at any point between fully closed and fully open. The door hinge includes a spindle on a shaft (3) and with a sleeve (5) threaded on the spindle. The sleeve is held between two cup springs (6) positioned between the sleeve and the grip housing (1). The sleeve and the cup springs provide a friction grip in any setting of the door. When the door is pushed in either direction the corresponding cup spring is compressed and releases a ball race (7) that reduces the friction grip between the spring and the housing. This enables the door to be moved. As soon as the door is released the friction grip is reset.
