To measure the speed of the movement of a longitudinal component (1) of a papermaking or cardboard prodn. machine, or paper/cardboard finishing machine, the component (1) has at least one trigger or trip (2a,2b) which can be registered, and which moves with the component (1) at its movement speed (V1). At least one fixed sensor (3a,3b) registers the passage of a trigger/trip (2a,2b) past it. The first trigger/trip (2a) is registered initially by the first sensor (3a) and then by the second sensor (3b), which is at a given gap (D1) from the first sensor (3a), and the time (T1) is taken between the two sensor observations and/or the time is noted between the passage of the two trigger/trip units (2a,2b) past a single sensor which are at a set gap (D2) from each other. The speed (V1) of the component (1) movement is computed from the relation between the sensor gap (D1) and the time span (T1), or the gap (D2) between the trigger/trip units and the noted time span betw een their movements past a single sensor. The component (1) has an external speed control (5), and the machine speed is set by a further control (4). The machine speed is measured and compared with the component speed (V1). The speed of the machine and/or the component (1) is controlled so that the difference between their speeds is held at a required value. The component speed is computed using the expression V1=(D1//T1). The sensor has a mechanical, induction, magnetic, photoelectric, chemical or reflection action. The gap (D2) between the trigger/trip units is longer than the gap (D1) between the sensors, where the trigger/trip units (2a,2b) are deployed along the length of the moving component (1) with a set gap (D2) between them. The stretch (S) of the moving component can be established from the time (T2M) between sensor triggers by the expressions S=(T2M/*V1)?-D2 or S=(T2M//V1)/*V1. An Independent claim is included for an assembly to measure the movement speed of a component (1) at a papermaking/cardboard prodn. machine, with at least one sensor (3a,3b) to register the passage of two trigger/trip units (2a,2b) mounted at the component (1).
