The invention provides an improved optical system for determining the physical characteristics of a solar cell (14). The system comprises a lamp (33), means for projecting light (32) in a wide solid-angle onto the surface of the cell (14); a chamber (22) for receiving the light (32) through an entrance port (13), the chamber (22) having an interior light (32) absorbing spherical surface, an exit port (24) for receiving a beam (40) of light reflected substantially normal to the cell (14), a cell support, and a lower aperture (26) for releasing light into a light absorbing baffle (11); a means for dispersing the reflection into monochromatic components (125); a means for detecting an intensity of the components (125); and a means for reporting the determination.
