The method involves determining a number of naturally occurring temp. variations during normal operation of a suitable measurement device and deriving reference values from these, generating a matrix whose size is determined by the number of length sections of the sensor cable and the number of the reference profile, conducting short single profile measurements and forming a mean value profile, deriving the current profile from the mean value profile and storing it in a table, assessing the stored current profile in steps, determining whether deviations exist and checking whether they exist for a number of adjacent length sections to establish the existence of comparable temp. deviations from the reference value and large area temp. variations or of a leak. An Independent claim is also included for an application of the method to exothermal, chemical and/or microbiological leaching processes.
