A method for damming a stream to provide sufficient depth of water to allow operation of suction pumps, submersible pumps etc. comprises a two rigid sections (2, 3) joined by a corner hinge (4) and covered with a waterproof foil. The sections can have a cellular structure for weight saving. The dam is held in place by the water pressure and is easily removed when not required. The dam sections are pieced by vertical holes through which stakes (8) are driven to secure the dam.
