The device includes a longitudinal beam(10) with a fixed batten stop(12) for a new roof tile to be laid, an adjustable fastening stop(14), and a step plate(16) in the lower region of the longitudinal beam. The rigid batten stop on the upper end of the longitudinal beam on the side facing away from the user is constructed as a right angle. A knee support plate(18) is provided above the step plate. The adjustable fastening stop has a stop section extending at right angles to the longitudinal beam and equipped with a sliding guide(20) running on the beam.
